Bacopa Monnieri: What the Research Shows, Dose by Dose

Quick answer

Bacopa has not been shown to treat any disease, and memory results are mixed, according to LiverTox. Studies used 300 to 600 mg of extract a day, usually standardized to 24-55% bacosides. Nerve Savior lists bacopa at 20% with no amount; label math caps it at 150 mg, half the low research dose.

The herb

What is bacopa monnieri?

Bacopa monnieri is a creeping herb used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, mainly for memory. Today it is sold as an extract in memory, focus and nerve products.

Its best-studied compounds are called bacosides. Extracts are often sold by bacoside strength, such as "20%" or "50%." That number tells you how concentrated the extract is.

Nerve Savior lists "Bacopa Monnieri (20%)" as the fourth of eleven ingredients in its blend. To judge it fairly, it helps to know what the research used.

The evidence

Does bacopa improve memory?

The answer is maybe, a little, and not reliably. LiverTox, an NIH reference, says bacopa has not been shown effective for any disease or symptom in well-controlled trials, and memory results are mixed (LiverTox, Bacopa).

StatPearls, a medical reference on the NIH bookshelf, also calls the evidence mixed. It notes one meta-analysis of 9 trials that found faster attention and reaction time (StatPearls, Bacopa). That is a narrow result, measured in lab tests, in people taking full research doses.

What about nerves in the feet?

Neither reference describes trials of bacopa for numbness, tingling or neuropathy. Bacopa research is about memory and attention, not foot nerves.

Doses

How much bacopa did studies use?

Studies used 300 to 600 mg of bacopa extract a day, according to LiverTox (LiverTox, Bacopa). StatPearls gives adult doses of 300 to 450 mg a day, usually standardized to 24-55% bacosides (StatPearls, Bacopa).

Bacoside figures are our math: extract weight times the strength. Nerve Savior's row uses the label-math ceiling, the most it could contain.

Strength

Why does the bacoside percentage matter?

The percentage tells you how much active material sits in each milligram. Nerve Savior's label says 20%, which is below the 24-55% range StatPearls describes for studied extracts (StatPearls, Bacopa).

A lower strength and a smaller amount stack together. Even at its ceiling of 150 mg, Nerve Savior's bacopa would supply at most about 30 mg of bacosides. The lowest research example above supplies about 72 mg.

The label does not name the extract brand or the test method for the 20% figure. Those details are common gaps on blend labels. Our guide on how to read a proprietary blend explains why.

Label math

How much bacopa is in Nerve Savior?

The label does not say. Bacopa is fourth in a 600 mg blend, so it can weigh at most 150 mg per two capsules (600 divided by 4). FDA rules list blend ingredients from most to least by weight (FDA, Labeling Guide Ch. IV).

Three ingredients sit above bacopa: Himalayan pink salt, cinnamon extract and AGP choline (alpha-GPC). Each of them could weigh more.

So the 150 mg figure is a ceiling, not a dose. At that ceiling, it is half the lowest research amount. The real amount may be lower still.

In context

How does Nerve Savior's bacopa compare with its other ingredients?

Bacopa is not the only ingredient that falls short of research doses. By label math, ginkgo and lutein also land below the amounts used in studies, while vitamin B6 could come close to its U.S. upper limit.

Each "Label" bar is drawn to scale against the research dose or daily guideline beside it. For blend ingredients we use the label-math ceiling, the most each one could weigh; the real amounts are probably lower. Studies tested each ingredient alone, not Nerve Savior.

Each bar shows the most the label allows, not the real amount. A short bar means even the best case is below what studies tested.

Safety

What are the side effects of bacopa?

Bacopa's side effects are usually mild and mostly involve the stomach. LiverTox lists nausea, belly pain, diarrhea, gas and dry mouth (LiverTox, Bacopa). StatPearls adds more frequent stools and cramps (StatPearls, Bacopa).

Reassuring

Worth knowing

If your stomach gets upset, tell your doctor. Pregnant or nursing mothers should ask a physician before any supplement, as the Nerve Savior label says.

Before you buy

What should you ask before buying a bacopa product?

  1. How many milligrams?

Look for an amount per serving. Without one, use label math for a ceiling.

  2. What strength?

Compare the bacoside percentage with the 24-55% used in studies.

  3. Why am I taking it?

Bacopa research is on memory, not foot nerves. Match the herb to your goal.

Bottom line

Is bacopa worth it in a nerve supplement?

Bacopa is low risk for most adults, but the evidence for it is mixed and centers on memory. In Nerve Savior, the amount is unknown and at most half the lowest studied dose.

If your feet tingle, burn or feel numb, see a doctor first. Diabetes, low B12 and other causes need a real diagnosis (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). Nerve Savior is a dietary supplement, not a treatment for neuropathy or any disease.

FAQ

Bacopa monnieri: common questions

Does bacopa monnieri really work?

The evidence is mixed. LiverTox says bacopa has not been shown effective for any disease or symptom in well-controlled trials. StatPearls notes one meta-analysis of 9 trials that found faster attention and reaction time at full research doses of extract.

How much bacopa should you take a day?

Studies used 300 to 600 mg of extract a day, according to LiverTox, and StatPearls lists 300 to 450 mg for adults. Those extracts were usually standardized to 24-55% bacosides. Follow your product label and ask your doctor if you take other medicines.

How much bacopa is in Nerve Savior?

No amount is printed. Bacopa is fourth in a 600 mg blend, so label math caps it at 150 mg per two capsules. That ceiling is half the lowest research dose of 300 mg, and the label lists a 20% strength.

What are the side effects of bacopa monnieri?

Mostly stomach-related. LiverTox lists nausea, belly pain, diarrhea, gas and dry mouth, and StatPearls adds more frequent stools and cramps. These effects were usually mild in studies. Stop and talk to your doctor if they bother you.

Is bacopa bad for your liver?

LiverTox rates bacopa as an unlikely cause of liver injury. That is reassuring, but it does not cover every product or every person. Tell your doctor about all supplements if you have liver disease.

What does 20% bacosides mean on a label?

It means 20% of the bacopa extract's weight is bacosides, the compounds most studied. Research extracts were usually 24-55% bacosides, according to StatPearls. Nerve Savior lists 20%, at the low end of that comparison.

Does bacopa help with nerve pain or neuropathy?

No reliable evidence shows that. LiverTox and StatPearls describe bacopa research on memory and attention, not on numbness or nerve pain in the feet. Tingling or burning feet need a doctor's checkup to find the cause.
