Vitamin B6 and Nerves: How Much Is Too Much?
Most adults need only 1.3 to 1.7 mg of vitamin B6 a day. The U.S. upper limit is 100 mg a day, and Europe set 12 mg. Very high doses taken for months can damage sensory nerves. Nerve Savior does not print its B6 amount; label math puts the most it could hold at about 86 mg.

The basics
Why does vitamin B6 matter for nerves?
Vitamin B6 helps your nerves work normally, so your body needs a small amount every day. MedlinePlus says B6 helps maintain normal nerve function (MedlinePlus, Vitamin B6).
The twist is that more is not better. The same vitamin, taken in large amounts for a long time, can harm the nerves it supports. MedlinePlus lists trouble coordinating movement, numbness and sensory changes with large doses (MedlinePlus, Vitamin B6).
Many nerve products contain B6, and the doses add up quietly.
Daily need
How much vitamin B6 do adults need each day?
Adults ages 19 to 50 need 1.3 mg of vitamin B6 a day. After 50, the target rises to 1.7 mg for men and 1.5 mg for women, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS, Vitamin B6).
The Daily Value on supplement labels is 1.7 mg (FDA, Daily Values). A label that shows "500%" for B6 means about 8.5 mg.
| Measure | Amount per day | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| RDA, ages 19-50 | 1.3 mg | Enough for nearly all healthy adults (ODS, Vitamin B6) |
| RDA, 51 and older | 1.7 mg men, 1.5 mg women | Slightly higher need with age (ODS, Vitamin B6) |
| Daily Value (labels) | 1.7 mg | The 100% mark on Supplement Facts panels (FDA, Daily Values) |
| Europe upper level (EFSA, 2023) | 12 mg | Highest daily intake judged safe for adults |
| U.S. upper limit | 100 mg | Highest daily intake judged safe for adults (ODS, Vitamin B6) |
| Nerve damage in reports | 1,000-6,000 mg | Taken for 12-40 months (ODS, Vitamin B6) |
Upper limits
Why is the B6 limit 100 mg in the U.S. but 12 mg in Europe?
The U.S. upper limit for adults is 100 mg a day, while Europe's food safety agency set 12 mg a day in 2023. The ODS fact sheet reports both numbers (ODS, Vitamin B6).
Europe chose a much wider safety margin. Neither number is a goal. Both are ceilings you should stay under.
100 mg a day
The tolerable upper intake level for adults. Severe nerve damage was reported at 1 to 6 grams a day, which is 10 to 60 times higher (ODS, Vitamin B6).
12 mg a day
EFSA based its level on reviews of peripheral neuropathy and built in a bigger buffer.
If you want the cautious view, the European number is the one to keep in mind.
Too much
Can too much vitamin B6 cause neuropathy?
Yes. Long-term high doses of B6 can cause sensory neuropathy, which means numbness, tingling or burning, often in the feet and hands. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke lists excess B6 among the best-known vitamin causes of nerve damage (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
The ODS reports severe, worsening nerve damage in people who took 1 to 6 grams a day for one to three years (ODS, Vitamin B6). Some cases improve once the cause is removed (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
- Numbness or pins and needles in the feet or hands
- Burning or odd feelings in the skin
- Clumsy steps or trouble with balance
- Symptoms that slowly spread or get worse
Too much B6 can cause the same tingling people buy nerve products to calm. If your symptoms began or worsened after you added supplements, tell your doctor and bring the bottles.
Label math
What amount of vitamin B6 is in Nerve Savior?
Nerve Savior does not print its B6 amount. The vitamin is listed seventh in a 600 mg proprietary blend, so it can weigh at most about 86 mg per two-capsule serving (600 divided by 7).
FDA rules say blend ingredients are listed from most to least by weight (FDA, Labeling Guide Ch. IV). That is how we can find a ceiling. The true amount is probably far lower, but the label does not say. Read the full breakdown on the vitamin B6 ingredient page.
B6 has a Daily Value of 1.7 mg (FDA, Daily Values). FDA's labeling guide says dietary ingredients with RDIs or DRVs "must be listed separately and the individual weights declared" (FDA, Labeling Guide Ch. IV). The Nerve Savior label lists B6 only inside the blend, with no amount. This is what we see on the label, not a legal finding.
At its ceiling of about 86 mg, Nerve Savior would sit under the U.S. 100 mg limit and above Europe's 12 mg level. Add another B6 source and the U.S. limit can be passed too. The Supplement Facts guide shows the full label.
Do the math
How do you add up your B6 from every source?
Gather every bottle
Include multivitamins, B-complex pills, energy drinks, sleep aids and other nerve or "neuro" products.
Find B6 on each panel
Look for vitamin B6 or pyridoxine. Write down the milligrams per serving.
Use the ceiling for blends
When a blend hides the amount, count the label-math ceiling. For Nerve Savior, that is about 86 mg.
Compare with the limits
Stay under 100 mg in total. Ask your pharmacist if you land above 12 mg and want the cautious European view.
An example
What does a real B6 total look like?
Here is a made-up stack to show how fast B6 climbs.
| Product | B6 per day | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| Multivitamin, 1 tablet | 2 mg | 2 mg |
| B-complex, 1 capsule | 25 mg | 27 mg |
| Nerve Savior, 2 capsules | Up to about 86 mg (not printed) | Up to about 113 mg |
In this example, the worst case lands above the U.S. limit. The real Nerve Savior amount may be much smaller. Without a printed number, you cannot know. If you already take B6, ask the seller or your pharmacist before adding another product, and read the side effects overview.
Next steps
What should you do if your feet tingle?
See a doctor before you add more supplements. Numbness, tingling or burning can come from diabetes, low B12, medicines, alcohol or too much B6 (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
A doctor can check blood sugar and B12 with simple tests. Bring a list of every supplement you take, with doses. The NIH says to tell your providers about all of them (ODS, What You Need to Know). Learn more in our nerve health guide.
Nerve Savior is a dietary supplement. It is not a treatment for neuropathy or any disease.
FAQ
Vitamin B6 and nerves: common questions
How much vitamin B6 is too much per day?
For U.S. adults, more than 100 mg a day is above the upper limit reported by NIH. Europe's food safety agency is stricter and set 12 mg a day in 2023. Most adults need only 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day.
Can vitamin B6 cause tingling in the feet?
Yes, high doses taken for a long time can cause sensory neuropathy, with numbness, tingling or burning in the feet and hands. NIH reports severe cases at 1 to 6 grams a day over one to three years.
How much B6 is in Nerve Savior?
The label does not say. Vitamin B6 is the seventh of eleven ingredients in a 600 mg blend, so label math caps it at about 86 mg per two-capsule serving. The real amount is probably lower, but no number is printed, so you cannot confirm your daily dose from the bottle.
Is 50 mg of B6 a day safe?
Fifty milligrams a day is under the U.S. upper limit of 100 mg, but it is above Europe's 12 mg level and about 30 times the adult need. Ask your doctor whether you need that much.
Is B6 toxicity reversible?
It often improves once the B6 source is stopped; NINDS says some neuropathies resolve when the cause is corrected. Recovery can be slow. Tell a doctor about tingling and list every supplement you take.
Is it safe to combine Nerve Savior with a B-complex?
Ask your pharmacist first. Both contain vitamin B6, and Nerve Savior does not print its amount. Using its ceiling of about 86 mg plus a B-complex can push your total past the U.S. limit of 100 mg a day.
